Just last week, we spotted that the deli at 45th&9th had shuttered its doors. Since it’s such a small operation, and it’s 9th Ave, we were worried the closure might be for good. But fear not! They’ve reopened, with a bright new color scheme:
Last week:
Looks like they had another go at painting the exterior gray. A few more goes and they’ll get there. Anyway, The interior renovations don’t look too significant, but with them out of the way we can look forward to another good year of the deli.
It’s been a long time coming, but new spot Marston Station is now open on W 53rd St. Seemingly named after a train station in England, the new place is a night spot – only open from 5pm to midnight – which should line up well with the crowds from the neighboring comedy club.
Unfortunately, that strip of the sidewalk got covered with a sidewalk shed just in time for their opening, and they haven’t put a main sign up above the doors (yet?), so it’s a very unassuming entrance:
…but inside is a different story:
A “unique” alternative to the traditional sandwich board out the front:
Way back in June of 2013we saw the applications filed under the then-name Marston’s, but the place sat dormant for a while after that. A few months later though, construction got underway, and now fast-forward to today and they’re open. Progress.
It’s still all very new, so there’s nothing on their site yet, but being just off 8th Ave with the comedy club next door they shouldn’t have much trouble bringing people in. At least once the scaffolding clears up.
Those of you living above 45th St now don’t have to trek a whole two and a half blocks extra south to get your gyro fix, with the second outpost of Turco now open, on 9th Ave between 45th&46th. It’s straight into business-as-usual at the new spot:
The spot used to be a Verizon store, but had been sitting dormant for a while until the Turco banner was put up:
Christmas day brought a different kind of present, with Puff Cha celebrating its opening at its home at the corner of W 50th St &10th Ave. The spot has its signature curry puffs, along with the usual tea, coffee, and pastries.
The goods:
By the time we stopped by there tonight they were closing up for the day (hence the Yelp photos above), so imagine this but without shutters:
To compare, here’s what the exterior was originally planned to look like. No word on if they’re still planning to bring the circles all the way out to the street.
If your New Years Resolution is to eat more food, here you go.
Presumably channelling The Beatles, a new liquor store has opened up just west of 10th Ave on W 57th St. Today they had their “Grand Opening” banner out, and put flyers up all around the surrounding few blocks.
You may come across these scattered all over the place:
The place used to be Sarah Café, which opened in 2009, but didn’t seem to take off with customers (lots of negative reviews), and closed after a few years, making way for today. Abbey Road has been gearing up for a few months now…here’s the place back in August:
The most impressive part is that all that space above it hasn’t been developed yet.
It’s been a few months coming, but BarBacon is now open, just in time for Christmas. The “bacon themed” bar is bringing mountains of bacon and “bacon-inspired” items to 9th Ave, including bacon-infused whiskey.
When we stopped by today it was “closed for a private event” (probably preparing the staff for the big opening the later in the day the next day), but here’s some shots of the interior from their Facebook page:
The lettering on the walls is very nice. We first noticed the place incoming back at the end of October, and have been keeping an eye on it since. I still have a few reservations about the whole concept, but they’ve obviously put a lot of effort into the place and the whole team seems really passionate about it, so it should be a hit.
After closing two years ago, Golden Chicken & Ribs have returned, and are now up and running in their new home on 9th Ave between 39th&40th:
It’s only been just over a month since the signs first went up for the new place, so it’s been a quick turnaround reviving the store. Hot chicken and ribs in the middle of winter…should be a hit.
This one slipped by us, but Bea – a new restaurant/cocktail bar at 43rd&9th– opened last month, as noticed by Gothamist. The place seems very high end, and looks pretty nice (if it’s in your price range).
You can check out the menu to get an idea of prices, but to give you a taste, cocktails are $12-$14.
The place was formerly the French restaurant La Madeleine, which was in that location for 29 years until its closure in 2008. Bea have retained several parts from the old setup, including most notably the back all-weather garden room complete with a tree planted there in 1976.
Bea seems to be pretty popular, and is getting good reviews on Yelp. Looks like it’ll be a nice addition to 43rd St.
The new outpost of popular West Village restaurant Snack Taverna opened on Monday, under the name Snack EOS. The Greek restaurant has taken over the former home of Sandwich Planet at 39th&9th, just south of Port Authority.
The restaurant opens at 5pm daily, so we didn’t get a chance to see it up and running when we went by. Here’s a photo of the interior from a few days before it opened, to give you a sense of what the décor’s like:
The letter they posted near the window announcing their arrival:
Here’s the section from it on the name:
We call ourselves EOS as Eos os the Greek Titaness of the Dawn and for us this restaurant represents a “new dawn” or “new beginning.”
We’ve been watching the place for the past few months as the store took shape, and suddenly it’s arrived. The place isn’t trying to be flashy or obnoxious, and looks like it’ll be a quiet, relaxing dinner spot.
After what has felt like an eternity, it finally happened…Kiehl’s on 9th Ave opened its doors. The purely coincidental timing meant that it opened on Black Friday “Kiehlsfest”, so of course they had the deals going.
The first 50 people into the store today got free gift cards, with one of them getting the $1000 one.
For those who haven’t kept up with our grippingnon-stopcoverage of the store, the place is foremost a beauty products store, with a few other stores across the city. What makes this one special though is that it also has a barbershop inside. Should be an interesting combination.
We missed this place when it opened, but better late than never. The Marshal, a new “farm-to-table” restaurant opened at the end of September on 10th Ave (between 44th&45th), and so far has gotten rave reviews.
The entrance to the place is pretty subtle and tasteful:
…and so is the interior:
The place is already proving extremely popular, making a great addition to the area. Check out the very diverse menu to see their offerings. They’ve also got a special menu for Thanksgiving tomorrow, if you’re looking for somewhere to spend part of the day.
Thanks to HK readers @OldNewsCS and N W for the heads up!
A quick note that the mysterious Urban Market we’ve been watching for a while on W 47th St is now open, stocked full of all sorts of groceries. The place looks like a bigger, fancier version of a bodega, and given the lack of supermarkets close to that area it should be popular. Be warned though, it’s a bit pricey.
A taste of what’s inside:
So far there’s still not too much online about the new place…the only thing we could find is a Yellow Pages listing (remember those?), with nothing more than a phone number. Williamsburg is also due for an Urban Market some time this year, no word on whether they’re related.
A quick announcement that is super important: the long-awaited Gotham West Market is finally open – as announced by everywebsiteever– bringing its collection of eight varying vendors to 11th Ave. Eater has a pretty good look at the place, with great photos and menus from the various vendors.
What you can look forward to inside, again per Eater:
Inside is an all-star lineup of vendors, ranging from Court Street Grocers to Ivan Ramen. Caroline Fidanza is serving soup, salad, and sandwiches at Little Chef, an offshoot of her beloved Saltie, while across the way is El Colmado, a tapas bar from Tertulia’s Seamus Mullen. There’s also another bar from The Cannibal, a burger joint from the AvroKo design team, plus outposts of Blue Bottle Coffee and the Brooklyn Kitchen.
The prize wheel is back: the new Pie Face on 8th Ave at 46th St is now open, selling their signature meat pies and “real” coffee from Australia. We’ve been watching this spot for months now as the store slowly took shape, and now it’s finally here.
Already busy:
As usual, they’ve got opening week promotions going on. Most exciting of all is the wheel, obviously:
Pie Face’s are taking over. A few months ago they opened a spot on 9th Ave, and recently opened one at Union Square, in addition to the “older” spots at Penn Station, Broadway &53rd, as well as several more throughout Midtown.
