  1. Scaffolding gone at Clinton Towers

The scaffolding outside the Clinton Towers on 11th Ave has been a depressing eyesore for a while now, and extended all the way out to the street across the semi-plaza area, pretty much creating a dark, uninviting cave. As of this week, it’s back to its former glory!

The florist didn’t survive unfortunately, but the Westside Market Place is still going, and the opening up of the area should help make the store much more inviting.

  1. Big news: new Citibike maps

Here’s something you probably won’t even notice: the maps signage on the side of the Citibike dock got updated today:

The big change seems to be that it’s now upside-down, with Central Park at the bottom and Times Square, etc, at the top. Makes sense considering there’s no docks past 60th St.

  1. NYPD gearing up for new Mercedes House location

Crews have been making progress on the new NYPD location in the Mercedes House. The new place takes up a wide stretch along W 53rd St, with a very modern exterior:

The wall has “NYPD” embossed into it, if it’s not visible

Still lots of work to do on the interior though:

Way back in 2011, DNAinfo reported that this might be incoming although it was close to being cancelled and apparently the plan is for it to serve as the new horse stables for the department. The horses will be living right next door to the state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz dealership, which will make for a funny contrast.

  2. Girls Girls Girls

The HBO series “Girls” took over half of Restaurant Row today, filming in and around a few spots in there.

The trucks were set up all down the block on W 46th St, and were filming inside Lattanzi and O’Flaherty’s, so expect to see them on TV soon!

  3. Bike store update two! Moving from 9th to 10th Ave

    653 10th Ave

We’ve really dropped the ball on this one! We mentioned the new bike store on 10th Ave earlier this week, then followed up with the name of the store. Now, turns out this is actually the bike store on 9th Ave’s new location!

The building is the fairly unique yellow one on the corner of 47th & 9th, which has had the faded bike paintings along the wall forever, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens to them.

  1. A new bike shop for 10th Ave

    653 10th Ave

Looks like Citibike hasn’t killed independent bike shops just yet: a new bike shop is opening up on 10th Ave at 46th St in the ground floor of the new-ish apartment building there.

Based on the signage, it looks like it might be a branch of Trek Bicycle Stores, a bike store group that are currently contained to the midwest. The posters up for the “Go By Bike Month” look like the same campaign that group’s run in the past, and their logo is on it, so it’s probably a safe bet that this could be their New York outpost.

Either that, or they’re just really excited to be stocking that brand of bike.
