Another day, another closure. Rice & Beans, on 9th Ave, is the latest victim, getting shuttered at the end of last week:
Strangely, the inspection results aren’t online, and they’re still listed with an A-rating from January, so that’s a mystery… It’s been around a week since the closure, so you can expect them to back up and running in no time.
Someone’s happy with their latest inspection result. At Bamboo:
Just one month ago Tehuitzingo opened their new store on 9th Ave, and already they’ve been hit by the health department.
They’ve put a letter up with the closure notice giving their side of the story:
They say they were closed “for reasons that cannot be shared”, but “were not closed down for a ‘dirty’ or unsanitary reason”. The health inspection violations are available online though, and list things like hot food not held at the correct temperature, evidence of mice, and food not protected from potential sources of contamination. So not sure what’s going on.
This is the second place this week the DOH has hit – they also got Stecchino further up 9th Ave, with a whole lot more “violation points” than here. Strict week at the health department it sounds like.
The health department has struck again, this time shuttering Stecchino, the Italian/American restaurant on 9th Ave just north of 51st St.
They racked up 94 violation points in their inspection this week, more than two and a half times their previous worst score. Not a good week I guess. They managed to get both the “live roaches” and “live/evidence of mice” ones, as well as a number of food handling and employee based violations, so that’s comforting.
Not wanting focus to go towards the health department closure notice, they’ve put their own giant sign up explaining the closure as a result of “mechanical problems”:
Hopefully they can sort out their “mechanical problems” and reopen cleaner than ever!

Over the week our favorite friends struck again, this time shuttering Mario’s Trattoria on 9th Ave. We’d hoped we wouldn’t see a yellow notice around the area for the rest of the year, but what can you do…
It looks like the closure was gas-related, which they’ve helpfully added to the closure notice:
Hopefully they can sort that out quickly and be back up and running soon. See you at the next closure…wherever it may be…
It’s been a few weeks since we’ve seen a health department closure around the area, but before we could get to the end of the year, Breeze was hit with the notice.
We’ll have to wait and see how long they stay shuttered for. With any luck we can make it through the rest of the year without the bright yellow notice returning.
As first noticed by DNAinfo, the Department of Health have shuttered the combined Pizza Hut/Taco Bell store – which also has Colombo’s Yogurt, Nathan’s Pizza, and Tim Horton’s in the same space – in Penn station for a whole heap of violations, including live roaches and flies around the store.
Of course, rather than have everyone think they’ve closed for health reasons, they’ve put this sign up:
A new Penn Station can’t come soon enough.
River Side Deli, on the corner of 44th & 10th, has been closed for renovations for months now, with little sign of progress or life from the store.
Now, as if the multiple months of closure already wasn’t bad enough, they’ve somehow managed to be closed by the health department…without even being open:
It’ll be interesting to see where they go from here, and how this closure will impact their renovation plans.
El Azteca, the popular Mexican restaurant/bar on 9th Ave just north of 52nd St, was shut down recently by the Department of Health:
The restaurant’s decided to make the most of the situation, however, and has decided to renovate the interior. It’s only been three days, and they’re already deep into the refitting.
They’ve had a pretty rough history in past health inspections, with a number of violations, but the closure was a first.
Here’s hoping they’re back up and running soon, with the health “issues” fixed.
