Tearing up the sidewalk outside Dalton’s

The Following is the latest show to take over the area, setting up all over the place from 50th & 9th to 56th & 11th throughout today.
We’ll be on the lookout for Kevin Bacon.
“Hanging out” along 9th Ave this morning:
The banner’s been up for a week or two now announcing the incoming Turco II – the “sequel” to the original Turco at 43rd & 9th:
The new spot is taking over from a Verizon store that closed down some time ago, just two and a half blocks up between 45th & 46th.
It looks roughly the same size as the original:
At first, the banner just read “Turco”, possibly signaling they were moving there. Last week they cleared any confusion up by slapping a “II” on it:
There’s no such thing as too many gyros.
Up around 53rd & 9th today. Not sure how real the problem is.
After what seems like an eternity, there’s finally progress at the site of Lime Jungle at 50th & 9th:
For reference, here’s what we’ve been staring at for months:
Keen observers will notice that the original Lime Jungle signage has been pulled down. For a number of weeks there’s been several public notices put up all over the place for the liquor license application here. Originally they started out as “Lime Jungle”, continuing the name, however that since changed to “Green Rancho”:
It’s been a big few weeks for the “Jungle” family of restaurants. Lime Jungle’s sister store Limón Jungle has also started fairly major renovations recently, which we covered last month.
It’s been good while it lasted, but the signs of the impending winter are starting to appear. Crispin’s – and several others – have set up their double-door entrance:
Before you know it the temperature will drop, the leaves will all disappear, and then it’s all over.
As mentioned yesterday, the Fashion Center BID held their annual Kite Flight event on the top floor of the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Hundreds of people turned out, and the weather was perfect flying conditions, making the day a huge success, and a great farewell to summer.
There was a build-your-own-kite station set up:
…and even some live music:
A great day overall.
From 1pm — 4pm tomorrow, the Fashion Center BID will be taking over the roof of the Port Authority Bus Terminal for an afternoon of high-flying action. Per the site:
…featuring kite decorating with Free Arts NYC, Ricardo Pascal and his miniature Mighty Kites, kite expert Glenn Davidson and friends, street games with Materials for the Arts, the always popular face painting by Agostino Arts, AcroYoga demonstrations from Om Factory, jugglers, unicyclists, and even more! In addition to the free food court, Band of Bicycles will be blending cool fruit smoothies with pedal power. All of this is topped off with an incredible musical performance by Louie and Subanda, and a special performance by Talina.
This is the 9th year the event has been on, and it’s completely free! There’ll even be stations to build your own kite apparently, for those who don’t always keep one handy.
See the Fashion Center’s site for more information.
The ASPCA adoption van was out by Petland at 50th & 9th this evening, so naturally we couldn’t resist stopping by to see the pets for adoption on display.
Adorable. If you’re considering getting a pet, adoption is always a good choice!
The decade-old “cheese market” and wine bar Kashkaval – on 9th Ave up between 55th & 56th – will be forced to close at the end of this month since their landlord, the Clinton Housing Development Company, has given them notice that their lease will not be renewed, and is apparently refusing to discuss any change of a renewal.
Running out of time, the owners of Kashkaval have started a petition to try get the CHDC to renew their lease.
This story has gotten coverage all over the place, including Gothamist and DNAinfo. Check their articles out for interviews with the owners and some more details. We’ll try not to sensationalize this any more than it has been, but if you want to support this long-time local spot, head over to the petition.
The final night of the Million Second Quiz was on tonight, bringing an end to the show described as “confusing” and “definitely on TV”. Seems like only yesterday it was getting ready to start.
It’s had its share of troubles over its million seconds two weeks or so, with “disappointing” ratings and a brush with controversy, with one of the contestants answering a question just as the timer ran out and being denied the prize or whatever happens in that segment:
After the short run the show’s had, it’s probably safe to say we won’t be seeing the stage around the area again.
Brooklyn Fare is coming to W 39th St. Today, crews were setting up and stocking the inside, gearing up for their opening soon:
The restaurant/supermarket hybrid will be the first Brooklyn Fare in Manhattan, with a $225 multi-course dinner, and “a lot more seafood” that the original. It won’t be cheap. The Wall Street Journal ran an article about the incoming restaurant back in March of 2012, which more or less explains what you can expect.
On 9th Ave this afternoon, getting the authentic New York experience at the historic Southern Hospitality:
